Program Requirements

To participate in the program, you must be enrolled as a full-time student and be receiving academic credit from your home institution. New Horizons does not grant credit directly; rather it serves as an extension campus of sending schools and partner institutions. The program recommends to your school that you be granted the equivalent of 16-18 semester hours of credit for successful completion of the programs requirements. Our primary partner school is Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa. Our study abroad semester is run through their excellent academic institution.

Health & Safety

The Centers for Disease Control (www.cdc.gov) recommends that all travelers to Romania be up to date on routine immunizations. The program requires that participants have up-to-date tetanus and diphtheria (Td) vaccinations and receive Hep A vaccinations. Other immunization decisions should be made in consultation with your personal physician. Please plan ahead and visit your doctor at least six weeks prior to departure as certain immunizations require several visits or need several weeks to take effect. Specific health threats for visitors to Romania and Eastern Europe include traveler’s diarrhea among others. Please visit the Center for Disease Control (http://www.cdc.gov) for more information and complete details. All program participants must purchase separate international travel insurance that will provide basic medical, medical evacuation and repatriation coverage (approximately $120). Northwestern College will make the actual purchase when all payments are in. Insurance will cover from day left to day returned. International Student Identification Cards are also available for purchase from NWC Global Education Center.

Program Costs

As our primary partner school is Northwestern College, you will need to be fully registered at NWC and will receive direct NWC credit for your coursework. You will pay regular Northwestern College tuition, room and board charges, and Northwestern College then pays the fee to our program.

If you are a NWC student your airfare for this program is covered and will be NO EXTRA COST to you.

Expenses for outdoor gear, international insurance, books, etc., are in most cases in addition to the program fee. Please see NWC’s website for more information. To speak directly with the program administrator please email charlotte_richards@new-horizons.ro
